AC Electrical Motors

Driven by an alternating current (hence the name) an AC Motor consists of an outer stationary strator being supplied with current in order to produce a rotating magnetic field. The moving rotor on the inside is attached to a drive shaft or powered axle to turn whatever needs turning.

There are two types of AC motors, the first being a synchronous motor. These are precise pieces of engineering, that only turn at the frequency to which the energy to the motor is supplied. Examples for where these are used are in power stations to generate electricity to the power grid at as specific frequency. They're also used in things like clocks.

Induction Motors are the second type. The energy supplied to the motor is used to drive a rotor, which is used to drive the axle. The amount of energy supplied to the strator, rather than the frequency, determines the speed of the engine, and are used in things where speed needs to be kept constant for long periods of time, such as appliances like washing machines & dishwashers.
